Job Description top

The University Cancer Institute of Toulouse Midi-Pyrénées, Oncopole, is seeking a committed, innovative chief executive officer.

The University Cancer Institute (UCI) is a New Generation University Clinic (featuring a large modern hospital and dedicated to future research with all of the necessary equipment) situated on the Toulouse Oncopole, part of the University of Toulouse.

The new, 1.5 billion-euro Oncopole campus is designed to facilitate ongoing discussions between all stakeholders (industry and academic professionals as well as those involved in science research and at the hospital level) to continuously improve the quality of care of all cancer patients, bringing the best and brightest to develop a very progressive international team capable of speeding up the process of innovation. Recruitment of this team will be funded by the Fondation InNaBioSanté. The campus will house more than 4,000 people on a site that spans nearly 2 million square meters, thanks to the combined support of the European Community, the French government, local public authorities and private investments.

The UCI is connected to a private, interdisciplinary research center dedicated to innovations in biology (the Centre Pierre Potier/ITAV); pharmaceutical companies (including Sanofi and Laboratories Pierre Fabre); cancer biotech firms; as well as a large number of technological platforms and facilities such as anatomopathology, tissue banks, sequencing, vectorised radiotherapy, accelerators, TomoTherapy appliances, stereotactic radiotherapy, endocurietherapy, screening, vectorology, cyclotrons, imaging scanners, MRIs, PET scans, combinatorial chemistry, nanobiotechnology, a Regional Center of Functional Exploitation and experimental resources for animal models, etc.

The UCI aims to develop a new, integrated type of biomedicine with new therapeutic strategies by introducing innovative research programs that combine fundamental sciences, engineering sciences and social sciences, and by pooling technological platforms.

The future research hospital—to open in 2013—will integrate the aforementioned Institut Claudius Regaud with the cancer department of three Toulouse teaching hospitals. It will feature both a 300-bed, 65,000-square-meter hospital and adjoin the 10,000-square-meter Cancer Research Center of Toulouse (CRCT), which is an Inserm/Paul Sabatier University laboratory.

The UCI will cover all types of cancer. It is the only one in the area specializing in hematology and gynaeco-senology. More widely, it aims to offer the latest diagnostic and therapeutic advances available to the clinical network serving the entire Midi-Pyrénées population (about 6 million people).

Currently, the CRCT is comprised of four scientific departments: Genetics and Cellular Oncology; Tumor Biology; Hematology and Immunology; and Experimental Therapeutics. Notably, half of the center's space has been kept open for new, external research groups who will be recruited in the near future. The CRCT is part of the internationally recognized Foundation RITC, the largest Toulouse Cancer Network, which is made up of more than 60 CNRS/Inserm research cancer teams.

From an understanding of fundamental mechanisms to the therapeutic molecule, the goal of Oncopole is to unravel the processes underlying oncogenesis and host/tumor interface through strong basic research, but also to develop high-quality translational programs in order to delineate new markers predictive of the response/toxicity to treatment, and to design and evaluate new, individualized anti-cancer drugs through contracted partnerships with private companies.

Role and Responsibilities of the CEO

The University of Toulouse is calling for applications for the crucial strategic position of chief executive officer of the UCI.

The CEO will run the UCI, including the hospital and the Cancer Research Center of Toulouse. He or she will bring vision and direct main orientations for research and care. The CEO will define the medical and scientific project, working in conjunction with key stakeholders and the team. He or she will then be responsible for implementing the project, considering its relevance on works of research, and overseeing issues such as translational research, therapeutic protocols, technological platforms, innovation transfer and international partnerships.

Main responsibilities include:
- Drawing up medical and scientific programs, budgets and reports;
- Establishing and developing new clinical and research labs at the UCI (the hospital and the CRCT);
- Further promoting the UCI on an international level as one of the world's most renowned cancer centers;
- Advancing the industrial development of UCI findings, together with Oncopole partners (pharmaceutical companies, the Centre Pierre Potier/ITAV, etc.); and
- Developing strategic partnerships with industrial groups as well as innovative small to mid-sized enterprises with the goal of stimulating technology transfer.

The CEO will chair a board that will include the secretary general, the research director and the hospital director.

The CEO of the UCI must be a MD and PhD and have a successful track record managing a hospital, and/or a translational research lab, and/or a national health or research organization. International health and science management, fundraising and diplomatic skills are also highly valued for this position.

The CEO will start no later than January 1, 2013. This is a 5-year position with an internationally competitive salary, which will be subject after the term to performance-based annual increases.

Candidates should email their curriculum vitae + letter of application + list of publications + letters of recommendation to: The President of the University of Toulouse 3, Pr. Gilles FOURTANIER (iuc.recrutement@univ-tlse3.fr). The closing date for applications is 15 March, 2012.

All applications will be considered by the search committee. Selected applicants will first meet with our executive search agency, then with the nominating committee, chaired by John Mendelsohn. The short-list will be submitted to the French Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Higher Education and Research.
