Director of the Research Center of Institut Curie

The Institut Curie invites applications for the post of Director of its Research Center, to succeed Professor Daniel Louvard, from March 2013. In the first instance, the appointment is for five years. The Institut Curie, a major cancer center in Europe, is a private, non-profit, charitable foundation, dedicated to fundamental and cancer research as well as cancer patient care. The Institute consists of a Research Center and a Hospital Group. A total of 3000 people contribute to the scientific research, cancer diagnosis and treatment and the teaching and training activities of the Institut Curie.

The Research Center has a total of 85 group leaders and covers a wide range of disciplines (including Biology, Chemistry, Bioinformatics, Biophysics and Physical chemistry). It is organized into 14 pluri-disciplinary departments that are associated with CNRS and/or INSERM and Paris Universities. It also includes a Translational Research Department, created in 2003, to promote the transition between basic and clinical research programmes, and several state-of-the-art core facilities. In total, approximately 1000 people (undergraduate and graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, engineers, staff scientists) work at the Research Center. Their activities are supported by an administrative office that provides support for financial and legal matters, including national and international grant applications, human resources, as well as the logistics and maintenance of the Institute's laboratories. In 2012, the total consolidated budget of the Research Center amounts to 87M€.

Missions:
The Director of the Research Center reports to the President of the Board of Directors and is a member of the Institute's Steering Committee. The duties of the Director are defined by the President of the Institut Curie and approved by the Board of Directors. The Director is responsible for general management of the Research Center, including its operation and programmes, with a budget approved by the Board of Directors. The main responsibilities of the Director are as follows:

• He/she defines the global scientific strategies and plans for the Research Center and will develop a vision for fundamental and translational research for the coming years. The Director is expected to ensure high caliber fundamental research, while fulfilling the missions of the Institut Curie: that is to translate new knowledge arising from all the disciplines represented at the Institut Curie for the benefit of the cancer patients. • He/she coordinates the general scientific goals of the research groups and facilities, and fosters synergy between the research departments.
• He/she will participate in financial negotiations with public agencies and other partners to obtain the necessary human resources and financial support.
• He/she will promote the scientific excellence of the Research Center and will ensure visibility both nationally and internationally for discovery and advanced training.
• He/she will contribute to the development of the Institut Curie as a comprehensive cancer center by promoting joint activities with the Hospital Group of Institut Curie.
• He/she will consult closely with the Scientific Council (Scientific Advisory Board) of the Institute on all issues of research strategy and implementation.

To fulfill these missions, the Director of the Research Center is assisted by a Deputy Director in charge of biomedical affairs, a Deputy Director in charge of advanced training, and an administrative Deputy Director. The Director will also have access to the expertise of the central services of the Institut Curie for matters relating to legal issues, intellectual property, public relations and internal communication, industrial partnerships, charity resources etc.).

In addition to his/her institutional roles, the new Director of the Research Center will also have the opportunity to develop his/her own research programme. A research team would be set up within one of the existing Departments (Units) associated with CNRS, INSERM and/or one of the University partners. Post-doctoral positions and technical support will be provided from IC's core budget, or via positions linked to its research partners.



Scientific background and profile of the successful candidate:

The Director of the Research Center should be an outstanding and internationally recognized life scientist with an excellent track record in fundamental research and a proven interest in interdisciplinary approaches and biomedical applications.
Experience as a successful leader in a strategic steering position and/or in the management of a research organization is essential, in addition to proven success in the coordination of major projects/consortia with international visibility.
The candidate should be fluent in both French and English.
