West Virginia University (WVU) School of Medicine (http://www.wvu.edu/som) is seeking an outstanding physician-scientist to serve as the founding Chair of the newly created Department of Clinical and Translational Science. The Chair will provide strategic leadership and direction to all aspects of the Department and will have the opportunity to recruit junior- and senior-level physician-scientists.
The Department of Clinical and Translational Science has been established to facilitate the recruitment, mentoring, and support of physician-scientists, and to contribute to the overall research mission of the School of Medicine and the West Virginia Clinical and Translational Science Institute (WVCTSI; http://www.wvctsi.org). The Chair will report to the Dean of the School of Medicine and work collaboratively with Clinical and Basic Science Chairs and Center Directors, as well as with others involved in clinical and translational research at WVU Health Sciences Center. The successful candidate will contribute to the structural and operational vision of the new department and will be provided with resources to recruit, in collaboration with other Clinical Chairs, physician-scientists and to develop the infrastructure needed to support high-level, externally funded research programs of the Department faculty. The Department of Clinical and Translational Science will help to meet a primary goal of the School of Medicine's Strategic Plan, which is "to create a strong and integrated clinical and translational research enterprise that addresses the health care disparities of the people of West Virginia."
West Virginia University (http://www.wvu.edu) is the State's land-grant university, with approximately 25,000 undergraduate and 5,500 graduate/professional students. It is located in Morgantown, West Virginia, which is rated one of the best small cities in the United States, with affordable housing, excellent schools, a picturesque countryside, and many outdoor activities (http://www.morgantown.com). The WVU Health Sciences Center (http://www.hsc.wvu.edu) includes the Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Pharmacy, and a recently launched School of Public Health, each with health professional and graduate programs. Two new research buildings accommodate our aggressive research growth agenda. WVU Healthcare, our integrated health system, includes a multispecialty practice plan and our campus hospitals. This organization is investing in clinical and research growth in partnership with the School of Medicine. New faculty are being hired, plans for increasing inpatient beds and ambulatory facilities are in place, and a $200 million capital infusion is underway.
Candidates for the position of founding Chair must have an MD or MD-PhD with a record of significant achievement in clinical and translational research, including an active, federally funded research program. The successful candidate should have experience in mentoring students, residents, fellows, and junior faculty. Credentials and accomplishments should indicate a strong, national reputation in clinical and translational research and support appointment as a tenured professor.
