The Department of Biology is an expanding and thriving multi-disciplinary research community of the highest international calibre. We research and teach across the spectrum of contemporary biological sciences and encourage internal and external collaborations and links.
In order to further build upon existing excellence in cell biology, the Department has created a new Chair in Mammalian Cell Biology, a key scientific area that underpins many of our teaching and research interests. More details on the Department and position are described below.
The Department of Biology
The Department has been independently ranked as one of the leading biological sciences programmes in the UK. Specific expertise exists in basic and applied areas of human and plant biology such as evolutionary and environmental biology, infection/immunity, cancer and the neurosciences. Through collaborations with other science and technology departments in York (e.g. structural biology, chemistry, maths, computer science) and association with the Hull York Medical School, the impact and potential application of in-house research is magnified - as recognised by major research sponsors such as the Medical Research Council, the Wellcome Trust, the Wolfson Foundation (which part-financed the new Centre for Immunology and Infection) and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which has funded a major new crop breeding programme targeted against malaria.
Such applied activities are underpinned by state-of-the-art mechanistic science, of which mammalian cell biology is an essential and integral part. The new Chair will be able to access core facilities such as mass spectrometry, genomics, post-genomic platforms and a range of in-house or out-sourced mammalian species.
The Department is located on the Heslington west campus on the outskirts of York City Centre, less than 15 minutes from the Central Station with good rail connections to London and Edinburgh. The quality of life, housing and educational opportunities are all exceptional and provide an attractive social balance to the professional opportunities.
The position
The Chair will be a member of the Senior Management Team, led by the Head of Department Professor Deborah Smith, and will be expected to contribute to strategies for research, teaching and collaborations. He/she will be offered full tenure, start-up funding and space in modern surroundings to establish a research laboratory.
Applications are particularly welcome from world-leading individuals with interests in cell signalling, cytoskeletal interactions, ageing and apoptosis, although other areas of expertise will also be actively considered. Candidates should be outstanding scientists and leaders with excellent track records, well-established reputations in their specific field and proven ability in obtaining significant external grant support. Applicants should be committed to the promotion of teaching and learning, and will provide leadership in research supervision, management and administration.
Salary will be commensurate with experience on the professorial scale.
The University has engaged the services of RSA, to whom applications should be sent.
