Under the direction of Stephan R. Targan, MD, IBIRI is the overarching administrative structure of three distinct yet highly interactive sub-units: IBD Clinical Care and Trials, Translational Research and Basic Science Laboratory Research.
POSITION SUMMARY:
Experienced Biomarker Discovery/Drug Development Scientist to supervise "precision medicine" team in an independent unit focused on inflammation-based diseases. Provide informed decision making in the discovery of biomarkers and development of therapeutic targets, including project planning, experimental protocols and procedures, and oversight of day-to-day unit operations. Work closely with institute director in collaborations with industry representatives. Engage in human in vitro and animal model-based in vivo research to use disease associated genetic variation to explore novel targets and define consequences of variants on initiation and perpetuation of inflammation.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assist the Director as needed to maintain relationships with partners in academia and industry to deliver a robust biomarker/target discovery platform. Use target biology expertise and chemistry knowledge for strategy and method development and validation of new assays, as well as technology transfer to internal and external partners.
Develops, adapts and performs new and established experimental protocols and techniques. Plans and implements research projects in biomarker analysis and therapeutic development using human and murine model based research. Work with computational and bioinformatics scientists to organize data collection, integration and analysis. Use knowledge of target-focused, pathway-focused, and phenotypic assays, as well as secondary assays to confirm and determine the mechanism of action.
Under the direction of the Institute Director, directs research team including post doctoral researchers, research associates and other lab personnel. Supervise and train post doctoral researchers, research associates and laboratory assistants. Develop work plan, devise experiments, identify techniques and approaches, oversee progress, evaluate results. Ensure that optimal timelines are set and met.
Ensure appropriate training of research unit personnel or investigators in sample handling and processing in relation to biomarker assays. Maintain strict adherence to research compliance regulatory standards for human and animal subjects use.
Work with computational and bioinformatics scientists to organize data collection, integration and analysis.
Develop new models, oversee maintenance of mouse colony, experience in in vivo mouse experimentation.
Manage day-to-day lab operations. Act as lab manager, including financial management, budgetary compliance, and human resources responsibilities.
