The Toronto Western Research Institute (TWRI), fully affiliated with the University of Toronto, seeks a Director to lead our research programs. TWRI is home to more than 100 investigators and 160 trainees spanning the spectrum of basic to clinical research including community and health services research. The largest research programs are in Neurosciences, including Vision, (70%) and Arthritis (20%). Laboratory-based research programs will be moving into the new Krembil Discovery Tower, a 200,000 Sq Ft, state of the art, wet and dry bench facility scheduled for occupancy in spring of 2013.
The ideal candidate for this position is an outstanding medical researcher with an established record of scientific accomplishment in neurosciences or arthritis with a commitment to foster the full spectrum of research. Evidence of scientific and administrative leadership is essential. The successful candidate will hold an advanced degree (PhD and/or MD) and be eligible for an academic appointment at the University of Toronto at the Associate or Full Professor level. Qualified candidates will be eligible for a clinical appointment in a relevant department of the Toronto Western Hospital.
The Director, working with Research Division Heads and other members of the Research Council, will be responsible for setting the goals and objectives of the Research Institute and providing strong scientific leadership that results in research programs of significant and sustained global impact. The Director will report to the Vice President, Research of the University Health Network, which also includes the Ontario Cancer Institute at Princess Margaret Hospital, the Toronto General Research Institute at Toronto General Hospital, and the Toronto Rehab Institute. The University Health Network is Canada's largest Research Hospital with a research budget in excess of $275M dollars, and is supported by three charitable foundations.
