Bayer CropScience is looking for a senior crop geneticist based in Gent, Belgium. The primary responsibility of this geneticist will be to manage research teams charged with implementation and management of a number research programs. Research topics include the identification of genomic regions and genes underlying phenotypic variation for traits of interest through the use of genetic markers or genomics-based approaches and the implementation of advanced novel molecular breeding tools and technologies. The program management component includes the identification of research opportunities and approaches that fit within the crop/trait portfolio, the planning and resourcing of these approaches and the operational management required to ensure the meeting of the milestones set forth. You will be part of multidisciplinary team including cell biologists, molecular biologists, breeders, pathologists and bioInformaticians that jointly focus on bringing innovative products to farmers and consumers.

Responsibilities:

  • Create a working environment that fosters differentiating innovation in Genetics and Genomics technologies and analyses.

  • Develop the scientific content for assigned research programs that are in line with the Bayer BioScience crop-trait portfolio

  • Lead and supervise scientific personnel and make technical and logistical decisions for those programs.

  • Human and financial planning for assigned research programs

  • Supervise external collaborations with academia and service providers

  • Manage all research program resources (human, scientific, infrastructure and financial) to ensure critical milestones are met

  • Maintain a working environment and atmosphere that fosters innovation in genetics and genomics

  • Ensure compliance with existing safety standards


  • Profile
  • You have a recognized level of experience in crop genetics or genomics (PhD with a minimum of 6 years of experience in the field)

  • Knowledge and experience in the field of molecular markers, genetic mapping and experimental design

  • Knowledge about plant breeding and Mendelian genetics

  • Proven experience in managing people and coaching research teams

  • Good understanding of the commercial R&D process

  • Capability for financial (elementary) and human resource management

  • Excellent knowledge of English

  • Good communication skills, a strong scientific network, and international recognition of your scientific results

  • Expertise in wheat, soybean, cotton or canola genetics and genomics; or in BioInformatics and BioStatistics is a plus.
