Job Description top

As seen in the 16 October issue of Science:

Freie Universität Berlin

FMP

The Department of Biology, Chemistry and Pharmacy at Freie Universität Berlin and the Leibniz-Institut für Molekulare Pharmakologie (FMP) im Forschungsverbund Berlin e.V. jointly invite applications for a tenured

Professorship in Molecular Pharmacology (W3)
in conjunction with a position as Director of the FMP

The successful applicant will serve as the FMP's scientific head and will be required to cover the area named above in research and teaching (with a reduced teaching load of one course per semester) within the Department of Biology, Chemistry and Pharmacy at Freie Universität Berlin. In accordance with article 100 of the Berlin Higher Education Act (Berliner Hochschulgesetz), a Habilitation, junior professorship, or equivalent postdoctoral qualification is required for this position.

As part of the Leibniz Association, the FMP is a non-university institution dedicated to basic science. Its research focuses on structures, functions, and interactions of proteins, and on the development of new concepts for pharmacological interference. An interdisciplinary approach, involving chemistry, biology, and structural biology, is crucial to this type of work. The unique combination of technology platforms at the FMP, including state-of-the-art NMR facilities, an open screening platform, and a mass spectrometry lab, provides an ideal environment for research projects that strive to discover new biologically active substances. The institute manages ChemBioNet's central compound collection (www.chembionet.info). The FMP is looking for applicants with outstanding track records of teaching and research in molecular pharmacology. The candidates work should be internationally recognized and focus on a pharmacologically relevant biomedical area of research. Regulation of protein degradation, disease-related aspects of protein unfolding, cell growth regulation, and histone methylation are considered attractive research areas, but the professor will not be expected to confine her-/himself to them. Expertise in drug development and defining pharmacological target systems is also welcome.

The successful applicant will have experience developing curricula and teaching courses independently, as well as acquiring funding for, and carrying out, sponsored research. A research focus allowing for collaborative efforts, in particular with other scientists at the Department of Biology, Chemistry, and Pharmacy at Freie Universität Berlin, and yielding research projects likely to qualify for external funding is desirable. The successful candidate will oversee all scientific activities carried out at the FMP and assume teaching and research responsibilities within the "Molecular Pharmacology" division of the Institute of Pharmacy at Freie Universität Berlin. She/He will be expected to develop innovative methodologies and techniques in order to contribute to the overall strategy of the FMP, and to provide leadership based on extensive research experience and reputation.

The language of instruction is mainly German, but some teaching may be conducted in English. A non-German-speaking appointee will need to be able to teach in German within a reasonable time frame.

The vacancy is a tenured position at the rank of W3. The successful candidate will be appointed either as a civil servant or as a salaried employee with comparable terms and conditions.

Freie Universität Berlin and FMP are equal opportunity employers.

Applications quoting the reference code FMP-Prof must be received, in hard copy and on CD, at the address below by November 14th, 2009, and should include a cover letter describing the applicant's interest in the position and relevant experience; a curriculum vitae with three references; a list of the 10 most important publications; a sketch of the envisioned future development of the Institute; documentation of previous teaching activities; a list of ongoing and prospective (joint) research efforts as well as externally-funded projects; and copies of the certificates of all academic degrees awarded.
