The Faculty of Medicine, University of British Columbia invites applications and nominations for the position of Head of the Department of Cellular & Physiological Sciences. We seek an academic leader to be responsible for directing and developing the teaching and research and service programs of the Department.
The Department has 39 full-time faculty members, with outstanding research programs in cell and developmental biology, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and neuroscience, and strong research support. The faculty research laboratories are part of the Life Sciences Institute (http://www.lsi.ubc.ca), and thus benefit from core LSI infrastructure and shared infrastructure from other departments.
The successful candidate should have a proven record of scholarly achievement, a strong research background, and a commitment to undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate health education. As well, the candidate should be committed to undergraduate science teaching as well as graduate and postdoctoral training. The candidate should have the ability to encourage and develop interdisciplinary initiatives and have broad and proven administrative experience. In addition, a strong communicator with proven leadership ability and demonstrated excellence in teaching is required. The term of the Headship is for five years, renewable once upon a satisfactory review. It is expected that the successful candidate will qualify for a full-time appointment at the rank of Professor with tenure.
The anticipated start date will be January 1, 2010 or upon a mutually agreeable date. Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications and subject to final budgetary approval.
