Director for Climate Science, National Centre for Atmospheric Science, UK
Three year contract in the first instance with the possibility of
renewal thereafter, £negotiable.
This is an opportunity for an outstanding research scientist to take
on the leadership of the UK's National Centre for Atmospheric
Science (NCAS) Climate Science Directorate. NCAS provides the
UK with a core strategic research programme in atmospheric
science. It has science directorates for Climate, Weather and
Atmospheric Composition and also provides airborne and groundbased
observations, data and computer & modelling facilities and
services in support of the UK university atmospheric science
research community. The NCAS Climate Science Directorate has a
world-leading reputation for climate modelling, prediction and
analysis. The position becomes available due to the current director,
Professor Julia Slingo, taking up the position of Met Office Chief
Scientist. This appointment will be made as soon as possible and is
initially for 3 years.
In this role, you will lead the NCAS Climate Directorate, developing
and managing the NCAS science strategy within the area of climate
research. Your personal research programme will contribute directly
to this. You will influence and facilitate interaction between the
NCAS climate science community and the wider UK science
community and stakeholders, including the private sector and
government departments. You will also be influential in developing
strategy and policy at national and international level.
This is a key role that demands strong leadership, science vision and
excellent communication skills. Applicants should have outstanding
research records exemplified by an outstanding track record of
peer-reviewed publications in international journals and a proven
ability to attract and manage research funding.
Employment will be by a UK institute of your choice, with a
suitable remuneration package being agreed between the institute
and NCAS.
