The European Science Foundation (ESF) provides a platform for its Member Organisations to advance European research and explore new directions for research at the European level. Established in 1974 as an independent non-governmental organisation, the ESF currently serves 77 Member Organisations including Research Funding Agencies, Research Performing Organisations and Academies, across 30 countries.

Mission
The Director of Science and Strategy Development will play an essential role in the high-level management of the Foundation. He/She will be in charge of leading the Science Units and of their further professionalisation and of the strengthening of the high-quality researcher-led co-operation in science in Europe through the ESF. He/She will contribute to the development of a dynamic role for the ESF in the ERA through new strategic directions, will represent the Foundation at a very high level and improve its visibility within the European research community by further developing the ESF Communications strategy. He/She will be an effective and trusted support for the ESF Statutory bodies.

The Director of Science and Strategy Development is a member of the Committee of Directors of the ESF and reports directly to the Chief Executive.

Position responsibilities
This position will involve:

  • Developing with the Chief Executive the strategic agenda of the ESF and its high level priorities;
  • Supporting the Chief Executive in European Research Area issues;
  • Ensuring a successful implementation of the ESF Strategy through an effective leadership of the Science Units as well as through further development of ESF internal quality assurance;
  • Further developing ESF's communications within the overall ESF Strategy Plan;
  • Contributing to the strengthening of relations with ESF Member Organisations;
  • Managing the preparation of ESF Statutory meetings;
  • Promoting a climate of positive, trustful and respectful staff relations and managing staff performance in a professional manner.
